Alignment Terms
Light-Aligned Spirits (Light Arts or LA)
Spirits whose nature and influence align with healing, peace, emotional clarity, and uplifting energy. They are non-confrontational and will never challenge a keeper’s will. Ideal for beginners or those seeking gentler companionship.
Dark-Aligned Spirits (Dark Arts or DA)
Spirits who possess a full range of autonomy and may work with transformation, shadow integration, sovereignty, protection, or challenge. Not inherently negative or malicious. Require mutual respect and are ideal for those comfortable with intensity and personal growth.
Dual or Mixed-Aligned Spirits (Gray Arts or Dual Arts)
Spirits who contain both light and dark traits in balance. They adapt to their keeper’s needs and energy, capable of nurturing or challenging depending on the dynamic. Many advanced or long-term spirit companions fall under this category.
Conjuration & Binding Terms
Conjuration
The process of ethically calling forth a spirit through ritual or metaphysical practice. Ethical conjuration involves screening, energetic compatibility checks, and consent from the spirit being. Not the same as forced spirit work.
Vetting
The process of assessing a spirit after conjuration to determine their personality, intentions, compatibility with human companionship, and overall safety for bonding. This ensures that spirits offered are suitable for human keepers and aligned with respectful companionship.
Binding
An energetic tether created between a spirit and a vessel or keeper. Binding does not trap or imprison the spirit; it simply makes ongoing contact and communication easier and more stable. All bindings are performed with full consent from the spirit.
Vessel Binding
A binding that anchors the spirit to a physical object, such as a piece of jewelry, crystal, or talisman. The vessel acts as a focal point and may amplify manifestations, but the spirit is not physically contained inside it.
Direct Binding (or Spirit-to-Keeper Binding)
A binding that connects the spirit directly to the keeper’s energy field. No physical vessel is required. This method is ideal for discreet companionship or advanced keepers who prefer non-tangible connections.
Distance Binding
A binding performed remotely without the need for the keeper to be physically present. This is the standard in modern metaphysical practice and is equally effective when done by an experienced conjurer.
Reverse Calling/Reverse Adoption
A process where a spirit chooses the keeper, rather than the keeper choosing the spirit. Typically involves a listing with minimal details, allowing the spirit to come forward and choose to work with the keeper based on how called they feel to the keeper.
Companion & Practice Terms
Spirit Companion
A sentient, non-physical being who voluntarily forms a relationship with a human keeper. Spirit companions may act as protectors, teachers, emotional supporters, creative muses, romantic partners, or magical collaborators. They are not servitors, pets, or tools.
Spirit Family (or Keep)
A group of spirit companions bonded to the same keeper. Each may serve different purposes (e.g., protection, healing, guidance). Spirit families often grow gradually over time and reflect the keeper’s evolving path.
Manifestation
Any way a spirit’s presence is perceived by the keeper. This can include sensations (cold spots, tingling), dream appearances, synchronicities, sudden thoughts, or energetic shifts. Not all spirits manifest in obvious ways.
Visitation
A one-time, temporary energetic meeting initiated by the spirit before a formal bond is created. Allows the seeker to sense the spirit’s energy prior to commitment. Visitation does not create a lasting binding and is always consensual.
Calling
A sense of being repeatedly or emotionally drawn to a specific spirit. Signs may include dreams, synchronicities, emotional resonance with a listing, or a persistent inner pull. Often an indication that the spirit is reaching out.
Channeling
The process of receiving impressions, messages, or symbolic communication from a spirit. This can happen through writing, thought, speech, art, or energy work. It typically strengthens with time and bonding.
Offerings
Items or energetic gestures given to a spirit in gratitude or connection. These can include incense, candles, favorite foods, written notes, or simply intentional presence. Each spirit may have specific preferences, but sincerity matters more than extravagance.
Quiet Period
A stretch of time where a spirit’s presence feels less noticeable. Not a sign that the spirit has left. Quiet periods are common and may be due to energy shifts, integration, or mutual rest. They are part of the natural rhythm of spirit companionship.
Bonding
The gradual development of mutual trust, connection, and resonance between keeper and companion. Bonding is strengthened through communication, offerings, daily life inclusion, and emotional consistency.
Release (or Unbinding)
The respectful act of ending a spirit bond. Always initiated by the keeper. Done with gratitude, intention, and clarity. Not to be confused with banishing. Spirits return to their own realm after being released.
